IRS Approval Guide for Users

When your lender submits a transcript order, Halcyon emails you a link to your personal IRS Approval Guide. Follow the five steps to log in to your IRS account (or create one) and approve the authorization request. Transcripts are retrieved within moments of your approval.

The IRS Approval Guide for Users is attached here for download. The full steps are also written out below.

Before you begin

You will receive an email from Halcyon containing a Borrower Portal link (highlighted in red in the email). Click that link to open your personal IRS Approval Guide.

If you have not completed authorization within 24 hours, Halcyon will send a reminder email. A second reminder is sent at the 72-hour mark.

Step 1 — Create an IRS account (skip if you already have one)

  • On the guide landing page, select Create a New Account – ID.me.
  • You will be redirected to the official IRS website to begin the ID.me account creation process.
  • Complete the ID.me identity verification steps.

Note: An ID.me account is required to create an IRS account. If you already have both an IRS account and an ID.me account, skip directly to Step 2.

Step 2 — Log in to your IRS account

  • Click Log in to your IRS account (next to the QR code on the guide page).
  • You will be redirected to the official IRS website at https://www.irs.gov/payments/your-online-account.
  • Click Sign in to your Online Account.
  • Click Sign in with ID.me.
  • Enter your ID.me credentials and click Sign In.
  • When prompted, click Continue to receive a 6-digit verification code by phone.
  • Enter the 6-digit code and click Continue.

Step 3 — Locate and generate the authorization request

  • Once logged in to your IRS account, click the Authorizations tab.
  • Select Power of Attorney and Tax Information Authorizations.
  • Scroll down to the Online Authorization Request section.
  • If you see a pending request, proceed to Step 4.
If you do not see a pending request
  • Return to your Halcyon guide and click the Generate Authorization Request button.
  • Wait a moment, then check your IRS account again.
  • If the request still does not appear, click Still don't see your request.
  • A pop-up will appear asking for your full name and address exactly as listed in your IRS account. You can verify your IRS account name and address by clicking the link provided in the pop-up.
  • Enter your name and address, then click Update and Generate Request.
  • If the request still does not appear, click Still don't see your request again. The name and address you entered will be pre-populated.
  • Click I already did this. A new screen will appear asking for your Social Security Number (SSN). Enter your SSN and click Submit.

Step 4 — Approve the authorization request

  • In your IRS account, under the Online Authorization Request section, click Approve/Reject next to the pending request.
  • Review the request details.
  • In the Sign and Submit section, check both boxes.
  • Click Approve Request.

Your approval is confirmed. Halcyon will retrieve your transcripts within moments.

Step 5 — Send your transcript

  • Return to your Halcyon guide page.
  • Click the Send Transcript button.

This is the final step. Your transcript order is complete.

Common issues

Issue What to do
Cannot find a pending authorization request in IRS account Use the "Generate Authorization Request" button on the guide page, then wait a moment and refresh your IRS account. If still missing, use the "Still don't see your request" flow (see Step 3).
Name or address mismatch error Enter your name and address exactly as they appear on your most recent IRS tax return — spelling, punctuation, and formatting must match precisely.
Foreign address on most recent tax return The IRS online authorization method does not support foreign addresses. Contact your lender — they will use the Form 8821 paper method instead.
ID.me account locked or forgotten credentials Visit https://help.id.me for ID.me account recovery.
Did not receive the Halcyon email Check your spam/junk folder. Ask your lender to confirm the email address on file.
